Ecosystem-Atmosphere Processes Study @ Yonsei Univ.
Our Mother Earth is giving life and nurturing many aspect of ecosystem. In particular, ecosystem consists of the organisms such as plants and animals but is beyond simple summation of individual ecosystem members. Ecosystem is a functional unit of living things, non-living chemical and physical components and environment encircling them and continuously interacts with inner and outer worlds.
Currently, global warming due to the anthropogenic emission of greenhouse gases is one of our main challenges, and therefore the role of ecosystem as an carbon sink is being emphasized and evapotranspiration from plant leaves and soil is also important to improve our understanding of hydrologic cycle. Plant is one of the main carbon sink in the global carbon cycle and controls air temperature, humidity and wind near the earth surface where human and all living things are breathing.
Ecosystem-Atmosphere Process Lab (EAPL) at Yonsei University studies on the interation between the ecosystem and the atmosphere. Traditionally, the ecosystem-atmosphere interaction has been studied in the area of boundary layer meteorology as a solid and inactive boundary conditions for modulating atmospheric circulation. Currently, we are dealing with ecosystem including terrestrial ecosystem and ocean ecosystem as an active player to modify weather and climate.
To improve our understanding of many aspect of ecosystem-atmosphere interactions and to reduce uncertainteis in our future prediciton of weather and climate, our research focuses on measurement and modeling studies of carbon/water/energy fluxes at the ecosystem-atmosphere interface in Asia in collabotion with scientists in other countries.
Department of Atmospheric Sciences in Yonsei University has been contributing to advances in atmospheric sciences and training top level scientists since 1968 as a leading institute of higher education and research in Asia. Diversity of faculty members boosts up synergy effects on research and education and provides various perspectives of atmospheric sciences to students. Ecosystem-Atmosphere Interaction study in Yonsei University has long history since mid 1970's and currently, Prof. Jinkyu Hong keeps up the research and eduation on Ecosystem-Atmosphere Processes at Yonsei Univ.
We hope that our studies help to maintain our sustainability for future generation and to educate leaders. We welcome any feedback from all of you.
