The College English Department, formerly known as the Communicative English Department, was established in March 1996, when the Korean government made English courses mandatory for all university students. At that time, there were eight full-time native English instructors teaching courses in speaking and writing to a relatively small number of freshman students. Today, the College English Department has grown to encompass 29 full-time instructors of various nationalities and teaches approximately 3,500 of the 4,000 incoming freshmen each year.

Since 2000, the College English Department has been part of Yonsei University¡¯s University College (¡°Hakbu Daehak¡±), which provides freshmen students with General Education - the core of an undergraduate education that offers first-year students diverse learning experiences and prepares them not only for study within their majors, but also to become leaders in today¡¯s society.

The purpose of the College English Department is to teach Yonsei freshmen to think critically and communicate effectively in English. Constantly striving to improve our program to meet the needs of our students, the College English Department created a new College English Program that aims to contribute toward the education of creative and critical thinkers, and proactive and globally-minded citizens. The primary features of the new curriculum include skills-integration, leveling, and a more academic focus. Courses currently offered by the College English Department are as follows:
