Issues

The fourth issue of Situations brings together four essays exploring the conjuncture and disjuncture between physical space (cities, nations, regions) and the semiotic sites of articulation (of gender, nationality, citizenship) in different cultural texts and contexts, from Seoul to Singapore, from film to maps.  The encounter and overlap of the Confucian and the Western, of the global and the local, of the visual and the notional, which the contributors unravel, create a rich, variegated diagnosis of culture at this moment in this part of the world.  The graduate student reviews offer attentive readings of images, film, lifestyle, architecture, and urban space of South Korea, which supplement the main articles by examining the minute interstices of the negotiations and contentions of cultural interplay.
